Departments

AYURVEDA is made up of two words- Ayuh and Veda. Ayuh means life and Veda means knowledge or science. Thus AYURVEDA in totality means Science of life. It incorporates all aspects of life whether physical, psychological, spiritual or social. What is beneficial and what is harmful to life, what is happy life and what is sorrowful life; all these four questions and life span allied issues are elaborately and emphatically discussed in Ayurveda.

Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life. Based on the idea that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in a person's consciousness, Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment.

Department of Kriya Sharir

Introduction

Kriya Sharir is one of the most fundamental and essential disciplines within the curriculum of Ayurvedic medicine. The term is derived from two Sanskrit words — "Kriya," meaning action or function, and "Sharir," meaning body — collectively denoting the scientific study of the functional aspects of the living human body.

As a subject, Kriya Sharir serves as the intellectual and conceptual bridge between the classical wisdom enshrined in Ayurvedic literature and the principles of modern physiology. It encompasses a wide spectrum of topics, including the Tridosha theory, Saptadhatu (seven body tissues), Trimala (three waste products), Agni (the metabolic fire), Ojas (vital essence), and the Srotas (body channels), all of which collectively govern the physiological processes sustaining life.

The department places equal emphasis on the study of modern human physiology, including cellular physiology, organ system functions, neurological regulation, endocrinology, and reproductive physiology, enabling students to develop a holistic and integrative perspective. By harmonizing ancient Ayurvedic knowledge with contemporary scientific understanding, the Department of Kriya Sharir prepares students to think critically, practice ethically, and contribute meaningfully to the evolving field of Ayurvedic medicine.

Vision and Mission
Vision
 To be a premier center of academic excellence in anatomical sciences, where the profound traditional wisdom of Sharira Vichaya is integrated with modern medical research to produce globally competent and clinically skilled Ayurvedic physicians.

Mission
  • Academic Excellence:To provide a thorough understanding of the human body through the study of Ayurvedic Samhitas and modern cadaveric dissection.

  • Ethical Foundation:To instill deep respect for the human body and medical ethics during practical dissection and anatomical study.
  • Evidence-Based Learning:To utilize advanced teaching aids and a rich museum repository to make the complex study of Sharira engaging and evidence-based.
III. The Philosophy of Rachana Sharira

The department follows the foundational principle of Acharya Sushruta, the pioneer of human dissection, who emphasized the necessity of combining theoretical study with direct observation:

प्रत्यक्षतो हि यद् दृष्टं शास्त्रदृष्टं च यद् भवेत् | समासतस्तदुभयं भूयो ज्ञानविवर्धनम् ||

— Sushruta Samhita, Sharira Sthana, Ch. 5/60

Significance: Only a physician who has directly observed the structures of the body through dissection and has studied the scriptures possesses a truly comprehensive understanding. This integration of practical and theoretical knowledge leads to the highest level of medical wisdom.
